Burnaby Montessori School respectfully acknowledges that we are located on the ancestral and unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh), and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) Peoples.
We recognize the deep and enduring relationships that these Nations have with these lands and waters since time immemorial, and we honour their histories, cultures, languages, and ongoing presence in our community.
As an educational community, we are committed to learning about and respecting Indigenous peoples, histories, cultures, and perspectives. We believe that fostering respect, belonging, kindness, and care for one another and the land is an important part of helping children grow into thoughtful and compassionate members of our community.
Growing Together Since 1995 – More Than 30 Years of Growing With Families
Since 1995, Burnaby Montessori School has been part of the Burnaby and Vancouver community.
What began as a commitment to providing children with a meaningful Montessori education has grown into a school community built around lasting relationships with children, families, educators, and the generations of students who have passed through our doors.
Over the years, our school has evolved, but our commitment has remained constant: to create a place where children are respected as individuals and where families feel welcomed, supported, and connected.
For us, being a school is about more than what happens inside the classroom. It is about the relationships we build and the trust families place in us during some of the most important early years of their child’s life.
Montessori is more than a curriculum. It is a philosophy that begins with a deep respect for children and their natural desire to learn.
We believe children are capable, curious, and eager to participate in the world around them. They deserve an environment that recognizes their individuality and gives them opportunities to develop at their own pace.
The Montessori philosophy aligns closely with what we value at BMS: respect for the child, independence, responsibility, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning.
Our role as educators is not simply to tell children what to learn. It is to observe, guide, encourage, and create an environment where they can discover their own capabilities.
EVERY CHILD IS UNIQUE
No two children develop in exactly the same way.
We respect each child’s individual personality, interests, strengths, and pace of development. Our teachers take the time to observe each child and understand where they are in their development so they can provide appropriate guidance and encouragement.
CHILDREN DESERVE RESPECT
We believe children should be treated with the same kindness, dignity, and respect that we expect from them.
We listen to children, encourage them to express themselves, and give them opportunities to make meaningful choices.
INDEPENDENCE BUILDS CONFIDENCE
When children are trusted to do things for themselves, they begin to understand what they are capable of.
We give children appropriate opportunities to make choices, take responsibility, and experience the satisfaction that comes from accomplishing something independently.
RELATIONSHIPS MATTER
A child’s relationship with their teacher, classmates, and family is an important part of their experience at school.
We strive to create an environment where children feel a sense of belonging and where families feel comfortable communicating with our educators.
THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE BMS EXPERIENCE
At the heart of Burnaby Montessori School are the people who work with children every day.
Our teachers bring professional knowledge, Montessori training, experience, patience, creativity, and most importantly a genuine care and love for the children in their classrooms.
Our teaching team includes Montessori-certified educators, Early Childhood Educators, and First Aid-trained professionals.
But qualifications tell only part of the story.
We look for educators who understand that working with young children requires patience, attentiveness, compassion, and the ability to see the potential in every child.
Our teachers build relationships with children, work closely with families, and create classroom environments where children can feel comfortable being themselves.
FAMILIES ARE AN IMPORTANT PART OF BMS
We believe that education is strongest when families and educators work together.
Parents know their children best. Our educators bring professional knowledge and experience. When these perspectives come together, children benefit.
We value open communication and encourage families to share their questions, observations, and experiences with us.
Over the years, many families have become an important part of the BMS community. Some have entrusted us with more than one child, and others have remained connected to the school long after their children have moved on.
These relationships are one of the things we value most about our school.
We want children to feel that Burnaby Montessori School is a place where they belong.
Our goal is to create an environment that is warm, welcoming, and comfortable, a place where children can build relationships, develop a sense of community, and look forward to coming to school each day.
We also want parents to feel the same sense of welcome.
Choosing a school means placing an enormous amount of trust in the people who will care for and guide your child. We understand that responsibility, and we work to build relationships with families based on communication, respect, and trust.
SERVING BURNABY AND VANCOUVER SINCE 1995
For more than three decades, Burnaby Montessori School has had the privilege of being part of the lives of countless children and families.
Our history is not simply measured in years.
It is measured in the children who discovered their confidence here, the friendships that began here, the families who returned with younger siblings, and the educators who have dedicated their time and talents to our school.
We are proud of our history, but we are equally excited about the future.
As education and the needs of families continue to evolve, we remain committed to learning, growing, and finding meaningful ways to serve our community.
Every child and family deserves to feel welcome.
We are committed to creating a school community where children, families, educators, and visitors are treated with dignity and respect.
We value diversity, inclusion, collaboration, adaptability, and accessibility, and we continue to look for ways to make our school environment more welcoming and accessible to everyone.
We believe that children benefit from growing up in a community where differences are respected and everyone has a sense of belonging.
Our school motto “Planting seeds in the hearts and homes of children” reflects something at the heart of who we are.
For us, those seeds are not simply academic knowledge.
They are the values, relationships, experiences, and attitudes that children carry with them as they grow.
A sense of curiosity.
A respect for others.
Confidence in themselves.
A willingness to try.
The ability to persevere.
The joy of discovering something new.
The understanding that they belong.
These are the seeds we hope to nurture during a child’s time at Burnaby Montessori School.
And we believe that when children are surrounded by caring educators and supportive families, those seeds have the opportunity to grow well beyond the classroom.
We appreciate the trust that families place in us and understand that finding the right school takes time.
